5A 12 volt switching power supply design using LTC3789 regulator

Using the LTC3789 high performance buck-boost switch-ing regulator controller , designed by Linear Technology can be designed a very simple and high efficiency 12 volts power supply electronic project .
The constant-frequency, current mode architecture allows a phase-lockable frequency of up to 600kHz, while an output current feedback loop provides support for battery charg¬ing. With a wide 4V to 38V (40V maximum) input and output range and seamless, low noise transitions between operating regions, the LTC3789 is ideal for automotive, telecom and battery-powered systems.

The operating mode of the controller is determined through the MODE/PLLIN pin. The MODE/PLLIN pin can select between pulse-skipping mode and forced continuous mode operation and allows the IC to be synchronized to an external clock. Pulse-skipping mode offers the lowest ripple at light loads, while forced continuous mode operates at a constant frequency for noise-sensitive applications.

This high current DC DC converter circuit operates from a wide input voltage range , from 5 up to 38 volts and will provide a 12 volt output at a maximum current of 5 Amperes .
It is recommended that for input voltage and output voltage to use planes to maintain good voltage filtering and to keep power losses low.
